Okinawa vs Mediterranean - Which is Better?

I'll cut to the chase - we actually don't know which diet is better for you.Surprisingly, there has never been a large-scale clinical study to compare the Okinawa diet versus the Mediterranean diet. But... that doesn't mean you can't decide...The Mediterranean diet, which is well known in Ikaria, Greece and Sardinia, Italy (both Blue Zones), is often referred to as the world's healthiest diet. There's no doubt that eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, potatoes and olive oil are good for you - all of which are the main features of the Mediterranean diet. The Okinawa diet, on the other hand, focuses on lower fat content foods and higher carbs (specifically from sweet potatoes, which make up over half of an Okinawan's diet!).  In general, the Okinawa diet generally includes a combination of:

  • Vegetables: Sweet potatoes, taro, bittermelon, seaweed (kombu, wakame, nori), green onions, daikon, kabocha

  • Soy foods: Tofu, miso, edamame

  • Grains: Rice, barley (mugi), buckwheat (soba)

  • Seafood: Mackerel, tuna, salmon

  • Drinks: Jasmine tea, dashi (broth)

  • Legumes: soybeans, lima beans

Personally, I've started to eat purple Japanese sweet potatoes, which I much prefer to regular sweet potatoes. They fill me up and go great with most meals. What's your favorite Okinawan diet food? Talk next week,CodyFounder, Spannr
